Using Scan2Recycle

How do I create an account?

  1. Select 'Sign up'
  2. You will need to provide the following details:

    • Title
    • First Name
    • Surname
    • Email Address
    • Address
    • Mobile Number
    • Advantage Card Number
  3. Then click ‘Sign up’, a code will be sent to your email.
  4. Enter the code.
  5. Login.

How do I scan (take a picture) of a product?

  1. Tap the Scan icon in the bottom navigation bar.
  2. Select 'Press To Take A Photo'.
  3. When prompted, allow access to your camera.
  4. Once the camera window opens, take a photo of the item you want to recycle.

    • Please use a light, plain background.
    • Make sure the picture is of the front of the whole product, with the brand and product type clearly visible and not out of focus.
    • Only scan one item at a time and make sure it’s the main packaging, not the outer one (e.g., a cardboard box) if the product has one.
    • If an item is not recognised, please choose the Brand > Product category > Packaging type from the drop-down list.
    • The list has an intelligent search function, so you just need to type the first few letters of what you are trying to find.
    • Any item labelled incorrectly will be rejected. If you cannot find your category or type of product in the drop-down list, you will not be able to bank it, as it is not a qualifying item and it will not count towards your 5 items required for the Reward.

How do I bank a product?

After scanning an item, when the image has been uploaded, click ‘Bank Item’.

Note: Banked items must be validated by the Scan2recycle team before being deposited. Make sure you bank items at least 24 hours before you intend to deposit them.

Why can’t I deposit my Banked items?

Banked items need to have been validated prior to depositing.

The validation will only take place during working hours (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, excluding public holidays) so you will need to plan ahead before you make your deposit to avoid disappointment in store.

For example, an item banked at 12:30pm on a Monday will be validated by 12:30pm on a Tuesday. An item banked at 7:30pm Friday will be validated by 5.00pm the following Monday.

Once verified the banked items will be available to deposit at a participating store.

All the items that have been scanned, but not deposited are now showing as ‘Banked’.

I have more than one product that is the same brand and make, how should I upload these images?

We advise that the product packaging is marked with a unique marker, especially if you have multiples of the same item.

If you are depositing these items the same day or within days of each deposit, then it is useful to have the main item in the foreground and the others in the background.

My items are part of a multipack. How many of these individual items must be deposited to qualify?

If you have items from a multipack, please deposit the total number that were originally included. However, we do understand some may still be in use, therefore we will accept the following as a minimum:

  • Interdental Brushes – 5 items
  • Water Flossing Head – 1 item
  • Electric Toothbrush Head – 1 item
  • Multipack Make-Up Sponges – 5 items
  • Floss Picks – 10 items

Do I need to take a picture of the barcode on the product?

No, we just require a clear picture with the whole item in focus, clearly showing the brand and product in full view.

Partial pictures of products are not eligible as they make it hard to identify the product being recycled.

What do I do if my product is not recognised?

The majority of No7 current range products will be automatically recognised.

If an item is not recognised, please choose the Brand > Product category > Packaging type from the drop-down list. The list has an intelligent search function, so you just need to type the first few letters of what you are trying to find.

Any item labelled incorrectly will be rejected. If you cannot find your category or type of product in the drop-down list, you will not be able to bank it, as it is not a qualifying item and it will not count towards your 5 items required for the Reward.

What do I do if my brand is not listed?

If the brand is not on the list, choose or type 'Other' and then type in the brand name in the box that appears.

What if my type of product is not in the drop-down list?

If you cannot find your category or type of product, you will not be able to bank it and it will not count towards your 5 items required for the reward.

Unless it is one of our excluded items for health and safety reasons (see full list further down) you are welcome to use the Recycle bin for items that may be hard to recycle but not eligible for a reward. There is no need to scan, bank and deposit these items through the web app.

Note: All manually entered products will be verified by our team behind the scenes and if we identify discrepancies between the image and the description, we reserve the right to withhold rewards or suspend accounts.

How do I know if my banked item is valid?

Go to your account, on the home page you can view a summary of your items or view in the banked section of your account.

  • Accepted – Valid item and available to deposit
  • Pending – Image pending validation
  • Rejected – Image or product did not meet the Terms of the Scheme (see’ Why was my Banked/Product item rejected?’)

Why was my Banked/Product item rejected?

The reason will show in your account for review.

  • Out of Focus
  • Unable to identify the product type/name
  • Image taken too far away/too close

Incorrect Product Tagging

  • Product was labelled incorrectly

Medical Product

  • Item was a medical product

No Label on Product

  • The label had been removed, therefore unable to identify the product

Back of Product or Barcode Only

  • An image of the back of the product (the image must be of the front whole product with the product type clearly shown)
  • An image only showing the Barcode – Barcode images are not required

Does not meet T&Cs

  • Item is not eligible and does not meet the Terms of the scheme
  • Parts of products, incomplete items, minimum quantity not met
  • Other reason detailed in the terms

Why can’t I deposit my items?

This could be because the items in your Bank are yet to be validated or have been deemed not valid for a reward.

Please check that at least 24 hours have passed since you banked these, if it’s on a weekday. If they were banked at the weekend, it would take 24 hours from the following Monday.

How many deposits can I make per day?

You can make as many deposits as you want in a in one calendar day (e.g., Monday from 0.00 to 23.59), but only one reward will be issued each day.

Can I deposit more than 5 items at a time?

Yes, you can deposit as many items over the 5-product threshold as you want in one day, but only one reward will be issued each day.

Note: A maximum of 8 rewards will be issued in any calendar month period. No more than one reward per day will be issued.

My device’s camera will not take pictures or won’t allow access for the QR code; what do I do?

Make sure you have set your phone to allow camera access when using the website. If this is not set, then you will need to change your settings or permissions. Please refer to your device’s user guide for specific instructions.

My device is saying its memory is full; what do I do?

This is usually due to a particular product setting; no device memory is used when storing images into the Boots Scan2Recycle platform and you will need to refer to the manufacturer’s guidelines for your particular device.

My location services are not working/not enabled. What do I do?

If your location services are not enabled, you will be unable to deposit items. Please make sure these are enabled on your device.

Android – we recommend using Chrome to enable settings go to Settings > Site settings > Location > Allow only while using app

IOS (Safari) - Select aA in the address bar > Website settings > Location > Allow

Settings > Privacy > Location services > Enable toggle

For all other devices or browsers please check their specific guidelines.

What can I recycle?

What products can I bring back?

The scheme is aimed at hard to recycle beauty, healthcare and wellness products that cannot be put in the council home recycling. Usually this is because they are too small (travel minis and samples, mascaras etc), made of composite materials (make-up palettes and compacts, lipsticks etc) or made from non-recyclable materials (toothpaste tubes, lotion pumps etc).

We will accept most hard to recycle products sold in Boots stores in the recycling box (with the below exceptions), but we encourage customers to consider if an item they would like to bring back can be recycled in their local areas (such as any glass and aluminium packaging) and only use the scheme for those that cannot.

Only items listed in the drop-down list in the Scan2Recycle system will be eligible for a reward. Except for those explicitly excluded which will show a warning. For a list of qualifying items please click here.

What items are excluded from the scheme?

For health and safety reasons, we cannot accept the following items: aerosol cans, perfume bottles, nail polish bottles, nail polish remover hair dyes, hair removal cream, hair removal wax; body spray; brow and eyelash tints and any products or packaging that are labelled with a hazardous or dangerous materials symbol; safety razors and razor blades, disposable razors and razor heads; used PPE (disposable masks, gloves and visors); medicine, vitamins and supplements blister packs and foils; any electrical items such as hairdryers and straighteners; any medical devices, electrical or not; food packaging of any type, including crisp packets.

In addition to the above, we exclude any item that is:

  • Not beauty, health or wellness
  • Not used or as empty as possible
  • Non-qualifying items or which can be widely recycled

How do I know if my product is a medicine?

Medicines can include prescription medicines and other products sold over the counter or in store.

All medicines have a legal requirement to have a P number on each component of the packaging, on tubes, blisters, carboard boxes etc. If any product has a P code on, it’s a medicine, so please check your product before banking.

Common items sold over the counter include products like pain and muscle relief product, nappy rash creams, creams such as emollients and fungal infection creams, scalp treatments, sinus sprays.

Please check your product is not a medicine before banking.

Below is an example of a product P number:

Example of P Number

What is an considered to be an Aerosol?

An aerosol is defined as a metal receptacle containing pressurised gas that sprays a substance. It typically has ‘pressurised container’ warnings on the back or a flammable symbol.

A pump or spray dispenser requires manual pump action to deliver the product and is not pressurised.

Aerosol examples: deodorants, shaving foam, hair mousse, tanning mouse, bath foams etc.

Aerosols are not accepted as part of the scheme.

Do my items have to be emptied before I deposit them?

Yes, please only return empty packaging. If your product is more than half full, empty as much as you can and do your best to clean your old product packaging, but we do understand that this might not be possible in some cases (like mascara or sealed tubes etc).

What happens to the items I bring back?

All packaging that is deposited goes to our recycling partner, MY Waste (formally ReWorked) to be recycled, reused or reformed into new products here in the UK. We guarantee that nothing will end up in landfill.

Hard to recycle materials that cannot go through traditional recycling streams are made into other products, such as street furniture or shop fittings. They also go into a proprietary material called ‘Storm board’. Originally designed as a replacement for wooden plyboard to help reduce the demand and overuse of forestry products, this versatile material is now used in a huge array of products by many joiners, shop fitters, building merchants and general home use.

MY Waste offer full traceability - a key element in protecting our seas and environment from plastic waste. You can read more about them here.

I do not have an Advantage Card; can I still participate?

You can only create a Scan2Recycle account if you have an Advantage Card (you will need to add the number at registration). This ensures that you can receive your reward when you present your voucher.

I accidentally deposited an item I did not scan; can I still receive a reward for this?

Unfortunately, only qualifying scanned and deposited items can receive the reward. However, rest assured it will still be recycled.

I deposited items that did not qualify; can I redeposit these?

No, unfortunately the deposit has already been counted and cannot be used again to deposit items. Deposited items cannot be retrieved or returned once deposited. Please do not remove items from the recycle bins for health and hygiene reasons.

Unfortunately, not; however, you are more than welcome to put your cosmetic and beauty recycling packaging in the recycling box.

Only one reward will be given per day per customer.

You can receive a reward for up to 8 eligible deposits in one calendar month.

Unfortunately, not. Any deposit in a day over the 5 eligible item threshold will receive one reward only.

Once deposits are made, items cannot be returned or retrieved from the bin to deposit again.

I didn’t receive my Reward; what do I do?

Make sure you selected over 5 qualifying banked items to deposit, then scanned the QR code on the recycle box and deposited the products.

It is also important to note that only one reward will be issued per day. If you deposited twice in one day, then you will only receive one Reward.

Also, only 8 rewards can be issued in a calendar month. If you have deposited more than 8 times, then the 9th deposit will not qualify for a reward.

Please ensure the total of your basket spend is £10 or more worth of qualifying products (see Voucher Ts&Cs for full conditions).
